Just a quick little blog post as this came up at a recent workshop so I thought I would pass on my thoughts about gear and how much you really need.
Having all the latest gear, the best camera, loads of lenses and so on, will unfortunately not make you a better photographer. If you cannot make great images with basic equipment then all the gear in the world will not improve anything.
Don’t get me wrong certain effects are only possible with specific equipment, but having the ability to work around the limitations of your current setup will improve your photography more than buying the latest super dupa lens that’s just been released.
This is one of the hardest concepts for people to get too especially if a photographer friend has told them that’s what they need or worst still the sale person at the local camera store told them they will get amazing photos if they buy this bit of equipment, something I hear all to often when in stores.
But fear not I will tell you the secret to becoming a better photographer… practice. That’s it, nothing magical, nothing that requires loads of money just good old fashioned practice. Take photos everyday, even “boring” subjects and try to make them more interesting and use whatever camera you happen to have to hand even if it is just your phone camera (a perfectly capable camera by the way). If you practice everyday you will improve just like driving a car the more you do it the easier it becomes.
